Candles

Good Afternoon!

Please remember to send your battery operated candle to school sometime this week!  Please please please put your child's initials on it.  We will hold them in the classrooms and make sure that they use them for dress rehearsals next week and we will keep them safe for the Christmas Program next Thursday evening.  Some of you ordered a candle this year and we do have them.  By Friday this week we will let students know who has one here and who doesn't.

Thank you!

Week of December 10th

Dear Parents,

Another busy week at SJS coming up!  On Tuesday the students will be going to Confession, on Wednesday we will have all school mass to celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe, and of course all of our learning that takes place each week.

Also if each student could spare one box of tissues that would be great!  We are good on wipes and making sure that we are keeping our areas clean but our tissues run low especially during this cold and flu season.  Thanks in advance!

This week in:

Reading: we will finish up our Seymour Simon research projects and begin reading our story Firestorm.  Our skill is drawing conclusions.  The reading test for this story will not be until next Wednesday!

Science: the students will have a science test sometime this week, possibly Wednesday, more info to follow!

Math:  multiplication practice- review your facts!

Language Arts: the students reviewed alphabetizing and dictionary skills.  Do you need them to organize anything or look up a word for you?  They should be experts!

Social Studies:  Chapter 5 begins.  We will learn all about the people of the Northeast region.

Spelling: Lesson 16

Religion:  We will review our facts about Our Lady of Guadalupe and Confession.

Character:  We read a story entitled My Secret Bully by Trudy Ludwig.  Such a  great story- ask your 4th grader about it! We are going to continue this conversation and also talk about second chances with friends.  Our character posters are ready to be laminated and will be up next week!

Thanks again for all of your support.  If any questions arise please feel free to contact us!

Week of November 26th

Good Evening 4th Grade Families,

We hope you had a fantastic Thanksgiving break with your families!  These next four weeks before Christmas Break are going to be jam packed!

This week in:

Reading:  We will read the story Mountains by Seymour Simon.  It is a nonfiction piece and has a lot of information to get through.  Our test will be on Friday but will be open book- we normally do not have open book tests but this is a great strategy to be able to find the information that is needed n the text.

Next week we will be combining classrooms to have the students work on an in-class research project on another one of Seymour Simon's books.  Each student will get paired with someone from the other class, work with that person to finish the project, and then will report back to their own homeroom class with their information.  It will be a great way to collaborate and work with a friend from the other room.  This also means that we will have no reading test next week.

Spelling: Lesson 14

Religion:  We are finishing up the Ten Commandments and starting to learn about the Trinity.  We also will have Advent activities this week and next.

We are also starting a mini-unit all about our character.  We are trying to figure out real life examples for each of our character pillar words. Our new words are:

trust, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.

We will be working on this throughout the year.  We will have some in class projects and different books to read and discuss as a class.  Please talk with your 4th grader at home about these words and to find out what we have discussed!

Social Studies:  Our region tour is underway and our binders are getting full of materials!  Last week we sampled some of our Northeast resources, saw a real life quarry explosion on video, and got a rock from that quarry!  We will have our Chapter 4 test sometime next week- probably Tuesday or Wednesday.

Science:  Students are continuing to work on Force and Motion

Math: The elapsed time projects were super great!  We enjoyed looking at all of them.  They were very creative and full of great pictures :)

Language Arts:  Nouns, Nouns, Nouns!

Week of November 13th

Happy Wednesday!

We had quite a busy day today in 4th grade!  Along with our busy normal morning, our gentlemen enjoyed a presentation from Father John all about seminaries.  Our ladies went to the LRC during that time and had lots of fun as well- ask them about their Turkey dance.... :)  They will enjoy a visit from some area Sisters later in the year.

Miss Winter's class is in charge of the Mary bulletin board in the hallway downstairs.  Our feast day that we have is the Presentation of Our Lady.  We briefly discussed that today and learned that one way to honor the day is by doing acts of service.  We realized that it is very simple to do and one thing we do as a school is our annual donations to the food pantry at Thanksgiving.  So please remember that fourth grade is in change of paper products if you can donate!

Mrs. Carbone's class will be in charge of the bulletin board after Thanksgiving break.

Please check out the tabs on the top of our blog.  We have one for spelling that gives a link to a website called spelling city- it is free and no need to enter an email.  They have TONS of resources for students to use to practice their spelling words from each lesson!  Our one for reading has a link to our textbook site with games and resources.  We also have a link to have the stories read to you out loud or you can read them by yourself on the computer!  We also put up a few great math practice websites and math games.  Cool math is a great website that students seem to enjoy. More tabs will be coming soon!

Also thank you for attending conferences last Friday, we truly enjoyed meeting with all of you!

This week in:

Spelling: Lesson 13

Reading: We are reading the nonfiction story Mimicry and Camouflage  Our story skill is a tricky one- cause and effect.

Math: They are still working on time.  The projects that some students took advantage of look awesome by the way!

Science:  They are continuing their study of Force and Motion

Social Studies:  Our region tour has begun!  If you haven't brought a 1 1/2 inch binder into school and a set of 5 dividers please do so ASAP.

Language Arts:  The students learned about Veteran's day and are continuing learning all about grammar!

Election Day Wrap-Up

Well the election is over and however our fouth and fifth graders feel about the results I think we can all agree that we had a fantastic time learning all about the process!  The Electoral College Monopoly game was probably the best part and we learned a lot about the Electoral College that way. We did a nice job listening to each other's viewpoints and looking at each candidate closely no matter how we felt about them.  We kept an open mind!

Our class and school vote had a different outcome then our national vote, but we still had a great time voting!  Here is a picture of our official voting booth:

Good Afternoon!

This week is a short week due to conferences on Friday.  Your conference time was given to you again on the purple sheet inside the report card envelope.  We look forward to meeting with each of you!

Also if you haven't signed the report card envelope yet please do so and return ASAP. Thank you.

This week in.....

Reading: We will read a nonfiction expository piece of Natuve American Basket Weaving. There will be no reading test this week.

Spelling: Lesson 12 will be due- it is a review lesson

Religion:  We will be finishing up Unit 1 at some point.  Also we have our 8th graders coming in to talk about the Devotion to Mary Project.

Math:  The students are continuing to work on time- more importantly elasped time- this can be tricky, you may want to quiz your student at home!

Science:  The students will have a quiz on Unit B Chapter 2 Lesson 1 on Tuesday (tomorrow).  They will continue to study force and motion.

Langauge Arts: It's all about NOUNS!  Plural, possessive, you name it!

Social Studies:  We will wrap up our election coverage.  Tomorrow (Election Day) we will vote for our favorite candidate based on what we learned this week.  In case you are home and watching the election tomorrow night I will send the students home with a map to color the states based on if they turn blue or red.  We know all about the electoral college thanks to our electoral college monopoly game!

See you all on Friday!

Week of October 29, 2012

Happy Monday!

This week is our last week of October and then hello November! We can't believe that November is already here!

On Wednesday (HALLOWEEN!!) the students may have an out of uniform day (no costumes for 4th grade)!! However you must have jeans on- no swishy pants, sweats, leggings, jeggings, or yogas. Or, of course, you may always wear your uniform. We also think that a skirt/dress wouldn't be a great idea because of our AWESOME Halloween party and games that we have in the afternoon! You may wear any school appropriate shirt you would like :)

We will attend mass on Thursday this week instead of Tuesday (All Saints Day)

Also a congratulations is in order for the WONDERFUL timelines that were presented in social studies today! Wow! Impressive!!

Spelling: Lesson 11

Religion: This week we watched an animated film on The Ten Commandments. We will finish it up tomorrow- it seems like everyone is enjoying it!

Social Studies: Election week is upon us! The students will be learning about how the election works. We should be able to have great conversations at home about it and be prepared to pick our candidate after we learn about where each candidate stands on the big issues. The students are also getting ready to play Electoral College Monopoly on Monday!

Science: In science the students started their unit on Force and Motion

Math: The students are learning about elapsed time, calendar, mean, median, mode, and some different ways to graph. Tentatively there is a quiz scheduled for Friday.

Language Arts: The students are finishing up the writing pieces on Road Runners!

Have a great week! Happy Halloween!!

How It's Made!

Today fourth graders learned more about the Industrial Revolution in Social Studies.  We watched a few How It's Made videos to show assembly lines and how technology has shaped our world.

How It's Made is a show on the Discovery Channel and they have a great website with video clips from the show that are free to watch.  Some students were asking for the link because they would like to watch more videos!
